On March 20, 2010 the Ventura County Fairgrounds’ Santa Cruz hall found itself filled with passionate fists, loud voices and a sea of two-finger salutes raising Vs high above heads. No, this wasn’t a peace rally, a protest, or the third coming of Woodstock. This was the V-town roller derby Clash of the Titans, as the V-Town Derby Dames took on the Ventura County Derby Darlins in a brutal full-contact double header that had fans on their feet routing for their favorite “V-town” team right up to the last two-minute bout.

At 4:00pm the doors opened and the games began. In the opening game, the Ventura County Derby Darlins’ Battalion of Skates took on the Visalia V-Town Derby Darlins in a B-team brawl.  The V-town Darlins started strong, proving they didn’t travel three and a half hours for nothing. Quick jamming by V-town left Ventura’s Battalion of Skates working hard to close a 21-point gap going into half time. When the whistles blew for the second half, Ventura stepped it up to close it up. Strong defensive walls halted the quick V-town jammers while Battalion of Skates jammers Emma Go Getter and Mona Sleeza began racking up points faster than a DWI repeat-offender caught speeding through a railroad crossing. Anita Slapahoe took control as the pivot to slow and speed the pack while Sandra Bullet and Lucille Ballsout knocked into girls like pinballs. In the last jam, the V-town and Ventura jammers took the line with a nail-biting one-point V-town lead. In the last two minutes, V-town was able to snake through the pack just a hair faster ending the game with a three-point lead: 105 to 101, V-town.

With the spirit of derby flowing through the crowd and the players, the heavyweight championship of V-town rivalry took the rink at 5:30pm with the Ventura County Derby Darlins VenDolls vs. the V-town Derby Dames. With the stakes higher, the brows lower and the skates faster, this was not an all-star game not to be missed. In the first half, Ventura jammers Ms Ally Crash, Devious Duchess, Vicious Ticious and Chronic Speed used nimble feet to, seemingly, prance their way through tight, hard-hitting Visalia packs. While the V-town jammers were quick off the line, mega blockers Titty Kitty O’Leary and Vendetta Vixen made brick walls sending the star to the floor, and lending Ventura a hefty double-digit lead early in the game.

Fired up and ready for retaliation, V-town brought their game faces to the second half. With a second wind, V-town stepped up their jamming, Ventura stepped up their blocking and the refs stepped up their whistle-blowing keeping the penalty box seats consistently warm with butts from both teams. With Ventura’s hard hitters in the box, seemingly one after another, V-town took advantage of ghost points and stepped up their game to close the gap and elevate the tension. Ventura fans were on their feet cheering for their home team as score moved in waves and the game came down to the last two jams. With a roar echoing through the room, the Ventura and Visalia jammers skated neck and neck the last two minutes, rolling for rights to the true V-town title. In the end, Ventura was able to get out of the box to pull off the win with a final score of 101 to 87, Ventura.

The Ventura County Derby Darlins vs. V-town Derby Dames double-header was an excellent example of fine roller derby double game play with two excellently matched teams skating for the love of blood, sweat and derby. There was tension, there were hugs and there were some bodies hitting the floor…hard. The next Ventura County Derby Darlins game is Saturday April 17 at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. Presale tickets are on sale now at a discount rate through www.BrownPaperTickets.com or your favorite Derby Darlin. Don’t forget, also, the Derby Darlins will be hosting their annual roller derby tournament on May 1 and May 2, 2010. Don’t miss 2 days, 12 teams, 18 bouts and 168+ Roller Derby Girls all packed into a warehouse at Seaside Park. Trust us, if you’re into roller derby, you’ll want to be there.

On Saturday February 27th the Ventura County Derby Darlins took a rainy day and added heat to open their 2010 flat-track roller derby season with enough steam to leave fans writing, “We want more!” on the windows of the Ventura County Fairgrounds.

An intraleague game brimming with sibling rivalry, at 5:00pm the Darlins took the track as a family separated into black and red enemies for a day.

Starting the bout with a speedy vengeance, in the red corner affiliate skater Celtic Cowgirl coached her team to use tight packs, two-man walls and good communication to take control offensively. Taking tips from the coach, Vendetta Vixen, Sharon my Pain and Mona Sleeza were able to execute strong defense that allowed red to gain a 14-point lead going into halftime. Red team point scorers include Miss Anita Slap a Hoe with 3 points, Potty Mouth Patty with 12 points, Anti-Social D and Pabst Smear Ribbon with 9 points each and Miss Ally Crash with 27 points.

First half highlights include big hits by black blockers Shirley Terrifying and Titty Kitty O’Leary that sent red jammers Miss Ally Crash and Ms. Anita Slap a Hoe knees first into the announcer’s station and face first through, under and on top of the penalty box. For the red team a twirling recovery by West Coast Derby Knockouts sub RegulateHer left black team big hitter Bettie 12G’s head spinning.

In the second half the black team came out of the gates ready for a fight. Tight front walls built by Lucille Balls Out and Meanie Mouse topped tight back walls headed by Sandra Bullet to make a defensive sandwich no jammer would beg to be in the middle of. Strong waterfalls, a tuned-in attention to the outside line and consistent re-engagement allowed the black team to make a full recovery. With black’s defense closing up the half-time gap in points, the bout came down to quad-to-quad combat in the last three matches. Despite the red team’s fast pack and strategic execution of the bridge to spread the pack out, with the red jammer in the penalty box the black team was able to seal the deal and take the win with a final score of 72 to 98. Black point scorers included Emma Go Getter with 8, La Jefa with 5, Mac E. Avelie with 4 and Chronic Speed and Vicious Ticious with a whopping 34 and 31 points respectively.

Second half highlights include black jammer Vicious Ticious’ displaying her superior skating skills by leaping over a pile of three fallen blockers to conquer the pack and take the points and a mega-whip from red blocker Potty Mouth Patty that sent red jammer Pabst Smear Ribbon gliding past the near fatal clutches of black team super-force Titty Kitty O’Leary.

The Ventura County Derby Darlins will host their next home game, a Double Header, on March 20th, 2010 at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. Tickets are $12 at the door or $10 presale with kids 10 and under invited to attend for free. For more information check out the event.

The Ventura County Derby Darlins take the flat-track Saturday February 27th in their first full-contact bout of the 2010 roller derby season.

An intraleague game brimming with sibling rivalry, it’s time to tenderize the fresh meat as household favorites such as Devious Duchess, Bettie 12G and Chronic Speed initiate the Darlins’ newest mercenaries in a quad-to-quad combat.

You may be asking yourself, “What is women’s flat-track roller derby?” Despite the visions of managed, co-ed, banked track exhibition that might pop into your head when you hear the words “roller derby,” the modern revolution of the sport you can expect to see today is nothing like the spectacle we once knew in the 50s, the 70s and even the 80s.

The Derby Darlins are real athletes and twenty-first-century roller derby is pure sport at its finest with real hits, real injuries and real hard work.

You are cordially invited to witness the transformation as mothers, workers, teachers, and everyday women of Ventura County metamorph into hard-hitting, mouth-guard touting, quad-skate speed demons in the epic winner-takes-all fight known as roller derby competition.

Doors for this event open at 4:00pm and the bout begins at 5:00pm @ the Ventura County Fairgrounds, San Nicholas Hall.

Although there weren’t any fists flying, there was no lack of spontaneous aviation as beanbags, darts and baseballs took aim to make roller-skate themed carnival games a hit at the Derby Darlins 2010 Season Opener Fun Fair this past Saturday, January 30th.

To highlight the event: Prizes were won, shuffleboards were broomed, Mac E. Aveli demonstrated some mean face-painting and the Darlins felt the heat… and then immediately the cold… as patrons took turns bringing the pain in the dunk tank.

As derby fans played for prizes, the Darlins skated for pledges, demonstrating whips, spins and incredible disco booty-shaking skills at a per-lap rate to raise money for the 2010 Battle for the Coast roller derby tournament!

What a way to start 2010! The Derby Darlins would like to graciously thank everyone who came out on January 30th with canned food to support the Ventura Food Drive and everyone who donated money or made skate-a-thon pledges to help fund the Derby Darlins’ 2010 Battle for the Coast roller derby tournament! This was truly an excellent community-service focused cavalcade of carnival tomfoolery, and we have you to thank!!THANK YOU for supporting your community and your local roller derby!!

A special thank you to: Fulmer Printing, Bangers and Mash (great band!!), the Ventura Food Share, Rusty's Pizza, Silva and Silva Photography, Hoop Habit Ventura, Dr. Sketchy Ventura, Epic of Ventura and the folks at Ventura Fashion Week!

We are halfway to our Battle for the Coast fundraising goal! To help support Battle for the Coast, please join us at our next BFTC event; HELL KAREOKE on March 6th! Live band, you sing, Rock Stars are made. Nuff said.
